List of Kohleria Cultivars – Ledin's Gesneriads

This list is my attempt at collecting information about all known cultivars and hybrids of Kohleria. This project is ongoing and I add new cultivars and information about them as I go. Feel free to contribute if you have something to add or correct in this database. The sources behind the information are The Gesneriad Society, Gesneriasterna, from hybridizers themselves and hobbyists on facebook and other gesneriad forums. Since only a small portion of all cultivars grown by hobbyists are officially registered, hybridizer, year and especially parentage behind the cultivar are almost impossible to find in many cases.

‘Ringbomskan’		Before 1880	This Swedish heirloom cultivar is named in honor of Thomas Ringbom who 2003 gave this plant as a gift to the swedish gesneriad association Gesneriasterna. He was then the 5:th generation growing this cultivar in his family. He could trace it back in his family to be grown since the 1880:s. Though the origin of this hybrid and genetic ancestry is unknown. Records in horticultural litterature has not yet been found. It shares many similarities to K. hirsuta (syn. K. eriantha) and is probably a hybrid including, or a selection of this species.	fertile

‘Sciadotydaea’			This cultivar produces large, red flowers which almost appears to be peloric. It is not to be confused with ‘Sciadotydaea Hybrid’ which is purple flowering and has been used a lot in hybridizing. ‘Sciadotydaea’ is similar to ‘Longwood’ The name Sciadotydaea originates from the time some Kohleria where placed in the genus Sciadocalyx and some in Tydaea. “Red Eriantha”	Heirloom variety		I’m not sure whether this is a single cultivar or different similar ones. It seems to be most commonly grown in Russia, Ukraine and Turkey. Judging pictures from other growers some plants have a strong red pigmentation of the hairs on the stems, flower stalks and under the leaves while some have a weaker pigmentation. In these places it seems to have been grown for a long time before more modern hybrids been introduced. It is most commonly grown and distributed under the name ‘Eriantha’ (which is an old synonym of Kohleria hirsuta) though this is probably not a naturally occuring plant, maybe an early hybrid? ‘Ryskan’ is very similar to “Red Eriantha” and should maybe be included in this group? Regardless of whether this is one or different clones, these plants are all pollen fertile which hints this could be an early selection or hybrid including K. hirsuta	fertile	“бабушкина” or “Grandmothers heirloom”

Kohleria × lucianii	(André) Fritsch		According to Die Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien 4(3b): p.178 (1894), Kohleria × lucianii is described as a hybrid of Kohleria bogotensis × digitaliflora. Today we know Kohleria bogotensis as Kohleria amabilis v. bogotensis, and Kohleria digitaliflora as Kohleria warszewiczii. In the same reference, Kohleria × gigantea is described as Kohleria bogotensis × warszewiczii. At the time K. warszewiczii and K. digitaliflora where considered separate species, but since they are seen as synonymous today, then K. × lucianii and K. × gigantea maybe should be seen as synonymous. According to The Gesneriad Register 2001; Check List of Names with descriptions of cultivated plants in the genus Kohleria, K. × lucianii is equal to Kohleria warszewiczii × inaequalis v. ocellata Since Kohleria × lucianii is the general name for the cross between Kohleria amabilis v. bogotensis × warszewiczii, it is possible that there are more than one clone distributed under the name. By examining pictures on the internet from different growers, there seems to be some variation between the plants.
